Call for papers
We are inviting submissions for a special issue of Estonian Journal of Education (Eesti Haridusteaduste Ajakiri), Vol. 9, No. 1, the topic of which is development of students’ general competencies. The editors of the issue are Professor of Educational Technology Margus Pedaste from the University of Tartu and Professor of School Psychology Eve Kikas from Tallinn University. This special issue is scheduled to be published in May 2021.
General competencies are increasingly important as learning goals in curricula of universities, but they are also important for employers. However, their definition, assessment and development is a complex task. The special issue of the Estonian Journal of Education on general competencies will cover the topic from scientific perspective. Contributions from assessors and developers of general competencies of all target groups are expected. We also welcome review articles that seek to define different general competencies and relationships between them.
More specifically we expect to receive articles on the following topics and sub-topics:
- the definition, evaluation and development of cultural and value competencies;
- the definition, evaluation and development of social and civic competencies;
- definition, assessment and development of self-determination;
- definition, evaluation and development of communication competencies;
- definition, evaluation and development of learning competence;
- the definition, evaluation and development of competencies related to mathematics, natural sciences and technology;
- the definition, assessment and development of entrepreneurial competence;
- the definition, evaluation and development of digital literacy;
- the links between different general competencies;
- the meaning of general competences and their relation to other competencies.
The deadlines for the publication are as follows.
- Author(s) will send the topic of the article(s) accompanied by the abstract in Estonian to Margus Pedaste (margus.pedaste@ut.ee). The abstract of no more than 200 words should summarise the theory of research, the objective(s), the methodology as well as the (expected) outcomes of the study – 15 April 2020.
- The editors send confirmation about the acceptance of the manuscripts to the corresponding authors – 30 April 2020.
- The authors will submit properly formatted manuscripts with a summary in English – 7 September 2020.
- The editors will inform the authors about the review results – 2 November
- The authors will revise the manuscripts suggested by the reviewers – 14 December 2020.
- Second revision of the manuscripts by the authors (if necessary) – 11 January 2021.
- Language editing of the manuscripts – 1 March 2021.
- Lay-out of the journal at University of Tartu Press – March–April 2021.
- Date of final publication – 1 May 2021.
In the next special issue we welcome articles in the field of today’s literacies and related areas and it is due to be published in November 2021.
Estonian Journal of Education is an international, peer-reviewed journal. The journal is interdisciplinary in nature and aims to open up critical discussion and debate across subject areas by involving all those who share a commitment to the field of education. The journal uses Open Journal Systems (OJS) and will be published in collaboration with the University of Tartu and Tallinn University by the University of Tartu Press twice a year. The journal is indexed in the database Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), EBSCO Academic Search Complete, and Google Scholar.
